2022 has been the re-enabling year for the Internet of Things Open Network (XOIC) at femProcomuns. We have kept working and providing support to The Things Network Catalan community. At the same time we have been (re)enabling city council’s projects but also holding workshops and educational activities. XOIC’s team has now a new member to handle the new workload.

The Internet of Things Open Network (XOIC) works to help in the deployment and sustainability of an open, free, neutral, community and technologically agnostic Internet of Things in order to promote technological sovereignty, social autonomy and techno-ethics.

This year we restored face-to-face meetings, cancelled due to pandemic, so we can continue spreading technology and reconnect with those we share common interests. In these XOIC’s meetings, femProcomuns’ role is as any other organisation in the community, with a contribution to facilitate it and keep it going.

Also in the social area, we have held three workshops in several Ateneus de fabricació de Barcelona for the configuration and first run of TTN gateways. Knowledge was spread among the community in order to make people capable not only to run/use the network, but also to deploy infrastructure and make it grow. In order to help with this idea, various gateways built during these workshops have been given to sponsors.

At Viladecans, we held five technical and educational events (you’ll find the related documentation in GitHub). XOIC was also at the Fira TecnoExpo, last November. We introduced a fast and non-intrusive solution for MODBUS based industrial networks for LoRa adoption.

We have kept providing support and presence in schools and other educational institutions like SaturdaysIA at Barcelona or Institut Domenech i Montaner at Reus where we had our time at the Disruptive Technologies Talks, where  we introduced IoT and LoRa technologies to their students.

Furthermore, we keep working with city councils in a deeper and broader way, not only for proof of concept but also turning previous successful proof of concept services into production.

Some of them are:

  • Ajuntament de Manlleu, deploying infrastructure for air quality monitoring and waste containers status.
  • Ajuntament de Granollers, network deployment and hundreds of domestic water counters deployment.
  • Ajuntament de Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, from Christmas lightning management to domotic solution.
  • Ajuntament de Rubí, in-door comfort at public workplaces.
  • Ajuntament d’Alcover, working with a local irrigation community, a proposal for city LoRa coverage for public and private services.

During this last year up to 23 new gateways have been added to The Things Network Catalunya. Nine of these come from the Ateneus’ workshops. Some other have been deployed by City Halls like Granollers (3), Manlleu (3) or Sant Andreu de Llavaneres (2). The network keeps increasing in size and density, you can check at this live map.
